Tips for Foster Carers

Autumn activities for you and your foster family

Autumn is a time for many events, such as the Equinox, Halloween and Bonfire Night.

While stately homes, museums, art galleries and the like hold various seasonal events at this time of year, there are also activities you can do at home with your foster children, as well as when you’re out and about.

Some are affordable, others are free. Beacon Fostering believes in the power of arts and the outdoors in benefitting children, so here are some tips for what you can do this autumn.

Walks in woodland and parks

One of the easiest things you can do with your foster child or children is to take a walk in your local park or woodland. For younger children, this is a great opportunity to encourage them to find and collect conkers and pinecones, or follow trails.

Older children, on the other hand, may find being in the outdoors and surrounded by nature beneficial to their mental wellbeing. If you’re based in Lancashire, for instance, check out walking trails in Townley Park and Witton Country Park.

Stately homes and museums

Many stately homes and museums up and down the country hold events in the autumn relating to Halloween or Bonfire Night. Check out organisations such as English Heritage or the National Trust, which offer discounted entry for members.

Home crafts and baking

Autumn is pumpkin season, and a way of teaching your children how to cook and encouraging them to try new things. You could make pumpkin tarts, cakes, soup or bread, or carve jack-o’-lanterns for Halloween. Alternatively, you could paint pumpkins, which is a great activity for younger children.
