Black History Month and Fostering: Celebrating Heritage, Building Belonging

Each October, we celebrate Black History Month – a time to honour the incredible achievements, resilience, and cultural contributions of Black people throughout history. For those of us in the fostering community, this month is also an opportunity to reflect on how we can better support, represent, and empower Black children and young people in foster care.

At Beacon Fostering, we believe that every child deserves to grow up feeling proud of who they are and connected to their heritage. That’s why we encourage our foster carers and the wider fostering community to use this month as a chance to learn, celebrate, and strengthen our collective commitment to diversity and inclusion in foster care.

Why Representation Matters in Fostering

For Black children in care, understanding and celebrating their identity is vital to their sense of belonging. When a foster carer recognises a child’s cultural background and helps them explore it, it can build confidence and emotional wellbeing.

Unfortunately, there are still not enough Black foster carers across the UK. A more diverse group of carers means better cultural matching for foster children and more inclusive fostering experiences overall. That’s why Beacon Fostering works hard to recruit and support carers from all backgrounds – especially those from Black and minority ethnic communities who can offer vital representation and understanding.

Celebrating Black History Month in Foster Care

There are many ways for foster carers to celebrate Black History Month and encourage children to connect with their culture:

  • Share stories and role models – Read books or watch films that celebrate Black history and culture. Talk about inspiring figures and how they made a difference.

  • Explore heritage through food and music – Cooking traditional dishes or listening to cultural music together can be a fun way to bond and learn.

  • Attend local events – Many communities hold Black History Month activities, exhibitions, or performances that are perfect for families in the fostering journey.

  • Encourage expression – Whether through art, journaling, or conversation, give young people space to express how they feel about their identity and experiences.

Creating Culturally Aware Foster Homes

Cultural awareness is essential in every fostering household. Beacon Fostering offers regular foster carer training on topics such as equality, diversity, and anti-racism, helping carers feel confident when supporting children from different backgrounds.

Our fostering agency also emphasises the importance of open communication – encouraging carers to ask questions, seek advice, and learn continuously. Building an inclusive home environment helps every foster child feel respected, valued, and truly at home.
