Fostering Resources Tips for Foster Carers

Books about diversity and inclusivity for children under 12

If we want to ensure that children grow up in a cohesive society that is accepting of different races and cultures, we must first ensure that they are taught about them.

And where better to start than books? Books provide children, particularly those of colour in the foster care system, with an insight into the wider world, and help them to develop an understanding of difficult topics, as well as the way that diversity enhances society.

Here are a few recommendations for books about challenging racism and celebrating cultural diversity.

All Are Welcome by Alexandra Penfold and Suzanne Kaufman (ages 2-5)

A celebration of diversity wrapped up in one picture book, explore a school filled with children of different colours, races, religions and cultures, where diversity enables them to learn and evolve through exposure to different ways of life.

Dealing With Racism by Jane Lacey and Venitia Dean (ages 7-9)

This illustrated guide provides readers with an insight into racism and anti-religious discrimination, with case studies illustrating how to solve various problems, such as a boy from another country who struggles to fit in, and a Muslim girl left out because of her faith.

My Hair by Hannah Lee and Allen Fatimaharan (ages 3-7)

A young Black girl takes a trip to the hair salon, where she sees and learns about the variety of styles that her relatives have. Which style will she choose for her birthday party in this book celebrating the versatility and diversity of Black/afro hair?
