Fostering Resources Tips for Foster Carers

Books about diversity and inclusivity for teenagers

If you are fostering, or thinking of fostering children and young people, you might find yourself looking after an individual with a different racial or cultural background to you.

In the event that this happens, fear not. There are plenty of books that provide readers with an insight into race, racism and cultural diversity, and show how we can strive towards an anti-racist world.

Beacon Fostering is all about inclusivity, and here are some recommended reads for carers and teenagers alike.

Talking to Your Children About Race by Loretta Andrews and Ruth Hill

An excellent source of information for parents and carers who want to educate their children about racism, but are unsure of where to start, Talking to Your Children about Race looks at the history of racism and its manifestations in modern day society. There are also activities that can teach you and your children about racism.

Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism and You by Jason Reynolds and Ibrahim X Kendi

Available in both YA (young adult) and standard editions, the basis for the Netflix documentary Stamped From The Beginning explores the history of anti-Black racism in the US. Though focused on the USA, the themes are resonant with those in Britain.

Just Mercy: A True Story of the Fight for Justice by Bryan Stevenson

Also available in its original and YA editions, this looks at the unjust nature of the US legal system against its Black citizens, specifically Stevenson’s work to overturn the wrongful conviction of Walter McMillan.
