Celebrities who were fostered

In 2023, there were over 100,000 children and young people in foster care. There are many success stories in fostering. Many of your heroes, celebrities and sports stars have grown up in foster care. In a previous blog back in June, we told you that Marilyn Monroe, Simone Biles, Seal, and Cher grew up in foster care. Neil Morrisey

Actor Neil Morrisey has appeared in many popular TV shows such as Men Behaving Badly, Line of Duty and Waterloo Road. He has never been shy of talking about his experiences in foster care, with his elder brother. Neil was 10 years old when he and his brother were separated from his parents and two elder siblings. During a BBC documentary, Neil Morrisey – Care Home Kid, Neil Morrisey learned that he was placed into foster care due to the unclean, neglecting household they had grown up in – resulting in their parents regularly leaving them unsupervised.

John Lennon

John Lennon was born during the Second World War meaning his childhood was automatically filled with a lot of uncertainty. Lennon’s parents were divorced and his father passed away at sea when the singer was very young. John Lennon ended up being fostered by his Aunt after being expelled from Nursery due to bad behaviour and then spent his childhood with relatives, regularly visiting his mother.

Alonzo Mourning

Retired NBA star Alonzo Mourning, who spent most of his career at Miami Heat, decided to live in a group home when he was 10 years old, after his parents marriage had fallen apart. Alonzo has previously credited his foster mother, Fannie Threet, saying that she taught him to ‘be a man.’

Barry Keoghan

Actor Barry Keoghan, most famous for his role in the film Saltburn spent 7 years in the foster care system. During this time he was in 13 different homes before he was eventually placed in the care of his maternal grandmother.
