Fostering Myths

There are many misconceptions when it comes to fostering. During this blog, we are going to debunk some common fostering myths!

Myth 1 – I have pets, so I can’t foster

This is totally incorrect. It’s absolutely fine to foster with pets. In fact, on occasions, a pet can be an asset to a foster family. As part of the application process your pet will of course be checked to ensure that they behave and react well around children and people they don’t know.

Myth 2 – I have to own a house to foster

Absolutely not true! You can foster whilst living in rented accommodation. You would just need to check that it is okay with your landlord to ensure that they have no concerns and you would have to make sure that you have a spare room in your home.

Myth 3 – I cannot foster, I have a job

This one is inaccurate! It totally depends on the type of work you do and the flexibility within it. These children/young people need consistency with foster carers who can be there with them to meet their needs and provide them with help and support so having flexibility within your other job would be crucial. We can explore how to balance your job with fostering

Myth 4 – I have to foster a child with the same religious beliefs as me

You can foster a child of any religion no matter on what religion you are, religion is not a barrier! The important thing is that the child/young person’s beliefs are respected. During the matching process we make sure that we find the right fit for the child and foster carer, ensuring that they are well matched.

Myth 5 – I have to be in a relationship / married to foster

You can be single and foster. It doesn’t matter if you are single, in a relationship, married or separated. Anyone can foster as long as they match the criteria to foster

Myth 6 – I am part of the LGBTQ+ community, I cannot foster

Anyone can foster and fostering does not discriminate!

Myth 7 – I am too old to foster

You have to be 21+ to foster but there is no upper age limit!
