How can friends and family support foster carers?

If you are considering fostering, you might be curious about the involvement of friends and family within the household. Can they participate and assist with the children? What form does this support take?

Below are five ways in which friends and family of foster carers can contribute to the well-being of foster families.

Emotional support

Carers have expressed that the support of family and friends is among the most cherished aspects of their experience. This support may manifest as a comforting conversation over the phone following a challenging day. Additionally, some carers have been fortunate enough to receive home-cooked meals delivered to their homes.

Help the children feel welcomed and part of the family

Foster carers make every effort to ensure that children feel integrated into the family unit. When friends and relatives participate, it provides an opportunity for the child to form new friendships and people for them to look up to. The presence of multiple positive role models significantly enhances a child’s self-esteem and contributes to their developing sense of identity.

Be there at short notice

For foster carers, it is crucial to have an individual or multiple people upon whom one can depend on short notice. In the event of an emergency or an unforeseen circumstance, the presence of a reliable person/s provides a sense of comfort and reassurance.

Help with the foster child’s homework

Homework can be a challenging and daunting thing for many children. We encourage our foster carers to help with the homework and family members can assist with this too!

Taking the children out

Some family members like to get involved by taking the foster children out for the day, which can give the foster carer a break

Support from family and friends serves as an essential foundation during challenging times. Establishing a network of support is crucial for personal development. Additionally, it offers opportunities for self-reflection and personal time.
