LGBTQ+ History Month and Fostering in the LGBTQ+ Community
February is LGBTQ+ History Month, an annual observance that celebrates the rich history and achievements of the LGBTQ+ community. Within this blog we will be discussing the contribution that the LGBTQ+ community can make when it comes to fostering.
Can you foster if you are a same-sex couple?
Absolutely! Being an inclusive fostering agency is something we at Beacon take great pride in. We think that a successful foster carer is not defined by their gender or sexual orientation, but rather by their personal traits and life experiences. We are proud of the good relationships we have formed with people from all backgrounds who have later become foster carers. The answer to the question of whether any member of the LGBTQ+ community can foster is always in the affirmative. At Beacon Fostering, all applications are accepted and will receive the same treatment.
Will my status as an LGBTQ+ foster caregiver affect how I’m treated?
You will get the same training and support as all of our other foster carers because you are an LGBTQ+ person. We only check to see if you can give a kid a secure and caring environment and if you can fulfill the fostering standards.
What effects might LGBTQ+ fostering have on children and young people?
We recognise that young people can benefit from the LGBTQ+ community. We advocate giving young children in your care a loving and encouraging atmosphere so they can explore and express their sexual orientation and identity without feeling stigmatised. Young kids in your care can feel safe and accepted if you provide them with the proper direction and instruction.
