National Fostering Standards Rewritten – What’s Changing?

The national fostering standards have been rewritten for the first time since 2011, constituting a major step forward in modernising fostering practice across England. These updated standards are out for consultation until 16 September 2026 and signal a clear shift towards more child‑centred, supportive, and streamlined fostering processes.

A modernised framework

The revised standards aim to:

• Simplify expectations for carers and professionals
• Reduce unnecessary bureaucracy
• Improve consistency across fostering services
• Strengthen the focus on children’s wellbeing and everyday experiences

Carers can expect clearer guidance, more proportionate decision‑making, and a stronger emphasis on enabling children to live as normal a life as possible. The changes also aim to improve communication, reduce approval delays, and ensure carers feel better supported throughout their fostering journey.
