Teaching foster children about prejudice
If you are raising a foster child from a non-white background, at some point you’ll likely need to educate them about social injustice.
Whatever your foster child’s background, it is helpful for them to learn about these topics so that they can be prepared for any injustice they may unfortunately face later in life.
Open discussions
It is important to discuss racism and race-related issues, not just when it is in the news. This can help them to remember that it is an ongoing issue, and that they don’t have to face it alone.
If you foster children of colour, let them know that you will be there to support them if they face any experiences of racism.
Appreciating diversity in the media
Expose your foster child or children to a wide variety of materials about different races and cultures. This will help them develop a wider understanding and an appreciation of the world.
From books to TV shows and films, seek out works that don’t just educate and cover issues of culture and inequality, but also depict people of colour in everyday situations where their race or culture is not a driving force of the plot.
History and culture
Learning about history and its implication on the social systems of today is also useful in understanding inequality and for personal enlightenment. There are books that can aid in this, as well as a wealth of resources online.
