The foster care assessment process
If you are interested in becoming a foster carer and have already started researching, you’re probably aware that you will undergo an assessment to see if you are suitable to provide a loving and stable home.
Although you may be feeling anxious about letting the assessors into your life and world, we at Beacon Fostering understand this, and we will tell you all you need to know to make sure you’re well equipped.
Duration of assessment
The assessment takes place over 4-6 months, and covers a variety of tasks from both the assessor’s and the potential carer’s sides.
It will involve a social worker visiting your home and assessing its suitability, and a discussion regarding your understanding of fostering, and what you hope to achieve in the role. There is then the Form F assessment, which a fully qualified social worker will carry out. This is all about why you’d be a good foster parent, and how your home will improve and enrich the lives of your charge(s).
Questions and topics to expect
Along with assessing your home and health, the social worker will also ask about your upbringing, family life and relationship history. You should also expect questions about your employment history, hobbies and transferable skills that will be useful in fostering.
Health and law checks
You’ll need a medical check with your GP, to evaluate how physically and mentally fit you are, and a DBS check too. There’ll also be a check with your local authority’s social services to see that you aren’t known to them. Additionally, you will need to provide references from previous employers.
