Upcoming dates to raise awareness of disability in the fostering community
This month, there are several days dedicated to the disabled community and raising awareness of conditions that affect the daily lives of them and their families.
Beacon Fostering is an inclusive organisation that acknowledges disabled children in foster care, so here are some key dates in March to be aware of.
World Glaucoma Week: 9-15 March
Glaucoma is an umbrella term for eye conditions that cause vision loss due to damage in the optic nerve.
Symptoms include a slow decline of one’s peripheral vision, blind spots and tunnel vision. The aim of the week is to educate people about the condition and encourage them to have eye tests to spot signs and get treatment.
World Down Syndrome Day: 21 March
Recognised by the UN in 2012 and active since 2007, World Down Syndrome Day celebrates and raises awareness of people living with Down Syndrome, a genetic condition caused by the tripling of the 21st chromosome. The Down Syndrome UK website has resources and activities for raising awareness of the disability.
Purple Day for Epilepsy: 26 March
Created in 2008 by Canadian Cassidy Megan, the then-nine-year-old wanted to raise awareness of the condition, in which somebody has seizures in the brain. She chose purple, as epilepsy’s international flower is lavender. Over the years, the event has spread around the world.
World Autism Acceptance Month: 2-30 April
April seeks to raise awareness of autism, a condition that affects the way in which someone communicates and interacts with the world. Fundraising packs are available from the Autism Education Trust and the National Autistic Society, and by raising money, you can help the autistic community overcome barriers in society and daily life.
