What to Expect in Your First Week as a Foster Carer

Starting strong in your fostering journey

The first week of fostering can feel overwhelming—but it’s also the foundation for a meaningful relationship. Whether it’s your first placement or your fifth, knowing what to expect helps you feel confident and prepared.

5 things to prepare for in week one:

1. A mix of emotions Children may feel nervous, withdrawn, or overly energetic as they adjust to a new environment. This is if you have a first placement following your approval date in your first week. Our team will support you with your fostering induction first and helping talk through matching and emotions. The placement of a child or young person will only go ahead if your induction has been planned and completed.

2. Paperwork and planning Expect visits from your supervising social worker and initial care planning meetings. Safeguarding is the highest priority for everyone together.

3. Simple routines make a difference Meals at set times, a consistent bedtime, and daily check-ins help children feel safe.

4. Patience is key Trust takes time. Be available, be present, and don’t rush emotional bonding.

5. You’re never alone Beacon Fostering provides 24/7 support, training, and therapeutic services to help you feel equipped and encouraged.

Tip: Keep a journal during your first week – it helps track progress and reflects how far you’ve come.
