What training does Beacon Fostering offer?

The personal development and training of each Beacon Fostering carer is a key priority for our organisation. We will collaborate with you to establish an annual training plan that enhances your existing experience and knowledge while also addressing any additional training required for various placement types or the specific behaviors of children and young individuals.

For those who are new to fostering, the training will commence with the Skills to Foster program, a comprehensive 2-day course designed to introduce you to the fostering process. During the first year following your approval as a foster carer, you will receive support to obtain your “Training, Support and Development” certificate.

This certification encompasses essential areas of care, including:

• Safeguarding and safer caring

• Child protection

• Support for children who have experienced abuse or neglect

• Identity and self-esteem

• Preparing young individuals for adulthood

• First aid

• Record keeping and documentation

• Education for children and young individuals

• Managing contact

• Child protection

• Addressing challenging behavior

• Health and safety.

Will I get therapeutic training?

After completing your initial 12 months with Beacon, or if you are already a seasoned carer, you have the opportunity to pursue additional training to become a Beacon Therapeutic Foster Carer.

This advanced training will equip you with the necessary skills and knowledge to assist children or young individuals with enhanced or complex needs. Some examples of the courses available include:

• Managing placement breakdowns and interventions

• Caring for large sibling groups

• Safe handling of medication

• Child sexual exploitation (CSE)

• Self-harming behaviours

Additionally, you will receive support in obtaining specific qualifications, such as the Level 3 Diploma in Therapeutic Parenting.
