Lloyd Kelly: Foster Care Story

From Foster Care to playing Champions League Football for Juventus in Turin. This is Lloyd Kelly’s story.

Many people will know Lloyd Kelly. The former Newcastle United and Bournemouth defender is now playing on loan for Juventus in Italy. However, not many will know that from the age of six, he and his older sister Mary, and younger brother Marcus were in care in Bristol and, until he was 18, the three siblings stayed together and had three different foster parents.

Speaking on his experience in foster care with the Guardian, whilst at Newcastle last year, Lloyd Kelly said “It was something that shaped me, it gives you life lessons early on. It moulded me into who I am now and what I stand for. I wouldn’t change anything that happened in my childhood because I wouldn’t be sat here as a professional footballer today without it.”

It’s not only his football that was a success, Lloyd Kelly also left school with 10 GCSE’s, something he credits his foster parents for, along with the providing him with stability that allowed him to continue his football career.
